13 years. It feels like a lifetime ago, yet the profound impact of 9/11 still blows us away like it was yesterday. On September 10, 2001, thousands of families went to bed quietly. Little did they know that would be the last night they slept with loved ones. At 8.46am the following morning, 19 members of the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airlines and flew them into the World Trade Center, crashed Flight 93 in Pennsylvania and struck the side of the Pentagon. Almost 3000 in New York City died on impact. On that day, the world changed. Many more Americans died in the War on Terror that followed 9/11, and the heroes and victims of the attacks will be honourably remembered in hearts across the globe. People like the passengers of Flight 93, who intervened with hijackers to bring down the plane before terrorists crashed it into what authorities believe was intended to be the White House. People like Welles Crowther, known as the banker in the red bandana, who lost his own life rescuing 12 others from the burning Twin Towers. Where tragedy and immeasurable evil lies; true humanity, bravery and compassion will always shine through, and it certainly did so in America that day.
