SummerSlam 2014 featured two different matches involving the Divas of World Wrestling Entertainment and, for the most part, the quality of said bouts varied dramatically. Stephanie McMahon battled Brie Bella in a match driven by story while Paige and AJ Lee attempted to make up for their disappointing Battleground match with a stellar performance at the second most important show of the year. Ultimately, it was the Divas title bout between Paige and AJ that delivered between the ropes and ranked as one of the best women's matches WWE has produced all year. The summertime spectacular was true to WWE history in which the Divas bouts were inconsistent in regards to the quality of the actual in-ring work. Sure, Stephanie and Brie had a tremendous story leading into the show but the work between the ropes was very average, at best. Meanwhile, earlier in the show, Paige and AJ were able to deliver at a high level despite what many considered a disappointing and lackluster story. WWE history is dotted with such instances of women delivering in the ring despite underwhelming story development while others enhanced their stories with quality matches.
