How Chris Jericho Prevented Chris Benoit's Son David From Wrestling

A few days ago we reported on a news story that David Benoit, the eldest son of Chris Benoit, had plans on wrestling a match with Chavo Guerrero Jr. in Calgary at a Hart Legacy event. The match is no longer because Chris Benoit's close Chris Jericho got involved, reports Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. The news of David's intention to wrestle was announced on Twitter by Bret Hart's older brother Smith. Even though David has never wrestled, Smith felt like it would get people interested about the show so he did what he could to convince him. There have been photos of David working out with wrestler Harry Smith (former WWE star DH Smith that's the son of Davey Boy Smith), but David has not completed wrestling training. Following reports of David's plans to wrestle, Chris Jericho got in touch with the Hart Legacy promotion and was furious with them for advertising this because he knew that David wasn't a trained wrestler. According to Meltzer, Chavo was told that David had in-ring experience. Jericho was told by Smith that they were just going to do an angle with David and he wouldn't be actually wrestling. Jericho insisted that they remove David from appearing at the show and the belief is that's what has happened. It's also been report that David has spent some time at Lance Storm's wrestling school in Calgary although he hasn't gone through all of the training. He's reportedly done things like enrolling, but not showing up on the first day to even start the camp. The report also notes that David has asked Triple H and William Regal about wrestling. Both of them told him to finish high school and suggested Storm's school because it's in Calgary where David lives. It's understandable that Jericho and Guerrero would be looking out for Benoit's son this was way. Jericho was a close friend of Chris Benoit dating back to their time working together in Japan in the mid 90s, then in WCW in the late 90s and then in WWE in the 2000s where they had a great rivalry as well as a run as tag team champs. Chavo Guerrero was a close friend of Chris Benoit as well as a travel partner that was one of the last WWE people that Chris contacted before his death, so both of them have likely known David since he was a child. It may be very difficult for David to ever make it in the wrestling business because of what his father did, but if he really wants to wrestle then it's up to him to put in the work to make it happen. Jericho was right to put a stop to it if David hasn't had sufficient training.
