10 Great Players Who Were Ruined By Spurs

6. David Bentley

A lot was expected of David Bentley when he arrived at White Hart Lane from Blackburn Rovers, for what was then one of the largest sums of money €“ £15 million €“ that the club had dished out for a player. He was touted as the next David Beckham €“ a right winger with a wand of a right foot and a reputation for scoring from long range and from set-pieces - and he had been one of the Premier League's better players in his time at Ewood Park. He had scored 13 Premier League goals in 84 Premier League starts - which is very good for a winger - and had forced his way in to the England reckoning. Sadly, it would not work out well for him at the club, as Bentley really didn't perform to a very high standard. Apart from one memorable 43 yard dipping volley against former club Arsenal, his time at Spurs will only be remembered for spectacular failure. He suffered the indignity of becoming the club's forgotten man and he was loaned out no less than four times €“ to Birmingham City, West Ham United when they were playing in the Championship, FC Rostov in Russia and the team he joined Spurs from, Blackburn Rovers. He didn€™t impress in any of his loan spells and returned to Spurs, before being released on the 7th of June in 2013.
