Almost two years on from his casting as the Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa’s first season is nearly upon us.

Comprising eight episodes across seven weeks, Season 1 marks a jumping-on point for the show, with viewers invited to join the Fifteenth Doctor and Ruby Sunday on a “cosmic joyride” across time and space. But what will this joyride entail?

We know there will be trips to the past and the future, with the TARDIS taking us everywhere from prehistoric Earth and war-torn battlefields to Regency England and the 1960s. We know the Doctor and Ruby will encounter space babies, a menacing maestro, and a deadly Duchess. We know that Rose Noble, Mel Bush, and Kate Lethbridge-Stewart will all return, alongside Carla, Cherry, and the mysterious Mrs. Flood.

Beyond this, many questions remain. And, as ever, fans have been coming up with their own theories – from the insanely bonkers to the insanely plausible!

It’s not long till we get some answers. So while you wait for that Space Babies/Devil’s Chord double-bill, why not consider some of the wildest possibilities...

10. The Doctor’s Costumes Have Hidden Significance

Despite only appearing in two episodes so far, Ncuti Gatwa has quickly established himself as ‘The Fashion Doctor’. He’s already worn five costumes, with many more to follow in Season 1.

The Doctor’s previous incarnations have all, to a certain extent, stuck to one core costume, occasionally swapping a shirt or t-shirt or coat out for a different one, but always maintaining a certain silhouette. So this is quite a departure.

However, the most puzzling thing about the Fifteenth Doctor’s wardrobe was the choice to announce the chequered ensemble as his ‘main’ look, when the leather jacket costume has, so far, featured much more prominently. Unless, as some have suggested, there’s more to this Doctor’s costumes than meets the eye.

Just as the future Doctor in Flesh and Stone was distinguishable from his present-day counterpart because he was still wearing his jacket, could the Fifteenth Doctor’s costumes correspond to specific moments in time?

Perhaps all the scenes featuring the chequered outfit take place in the Doctor’s future. After all, there did seem to be something different about the Doctor stood in the bar, observing Ruby from a distance.

Either that, or Fifteen has just finally decided to delve into the TARDIS wardrobe.
